After years of what I thought was “deep diving” into all the practices and prearranged processes that we’re “supposed” to do if we want to have a spiritual awakening – I found myself surrounded by hyperbole and a load of pompous a*holes. I knew in my heart and soul, that couldn’t be it. That couldn’t be what being “spiritual” really meant?! I found myself thinking, “There has to be a different path. There have to be other people like me that value spiritual growth, and genuine happiness without all the finger-pointing and self-righteousness… And spirit forbid they have a little sense of humor along the way!” To that end, I spent many years meandering my way through different practices, talking to folks in different groups, and trying to find how my unique soul fit into the puzzle of this existence…

And that’s when, like many things in my life, I had the most amazingly vivid dream…

This particular dream began as a run-of-the-mill work dream, yuck. I was sitting in my office at work, plodding away at work tasks like one normally does, when I was overcome with an urgent need to escape. From what? I had no idea. But I had to get the fuck out. As I stood up, I noticed things had suddenly shifted. I didn’t feel that hollowness that you experience in dreams – that false sense of reality – that subtle awareness that this isn’t really happening. This felt real, this felt tangible, and I was beyond confused. What I did know is that I felt itchy and uncomfortable, like I didn’t belong.

Bursting with frustration and confusion, I rushed outside, turned my face towards the sky, closed my eyes, and tried to breathe… All of a sudden, the world went still – something was calling me…urging me to open my eyes. After a great deal of reluctance, I slowly opened my eyes and brought my gaze down to my body – which was suddenly nude… staring at my skin I noticed it had this dullish-opaque look to it. That’s when, much to my own surprise, I began to peel off my own skin! A bit repulsive at first, but what I discovered underneath that mundane, human exterior was this incredibly striking, glowing, iridescent flesh. As I frantically pulled away the old worn shell of my physical body, I began to become aware of an energetic presence, I was overcome with feelings of pure love, unconditional acceptance, and this penetrating, unrestrained, wild happiness. The energy never took a physical form – rather it was a profound sense of knowing… The truth of it all was so strong I could feel it in my bones…

I was being called to work with snakes.

When I woke up, I was being driven like nothing I had ever experienced before. I dove headfirst into anything and everything I could get my hands on to learn. Much to my surprise, everything fell into place quite quickly and easily. The local pet shop just happened to be having a sale on enclosures (not that it was necessary, it was simply a pleasant surprise). AND the local reptile expo was coming up in just a week or so time. It was all so synchronous, so easy. It was hard to deny the call. Needless to say, we brought home our first ball python from the expo – a male firefly named River, The Snake (who we affectionately call Snake). This beautifully scaled soul is the snake that launched a life-long obsession. And really, is the muse that started Sacred Scales.

Like the snake, Sacred Scales is ever-evolving, however, our unyielding purpose is to educate and inspire current and future snake keepers and breeders to enjoy not only the beauty but also the magic and life lessons ushered into our lives by these magnificent creatures.
